Holographic Messages

Holographic Messages

"Last month Prince Charles delivered a speech at the
World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He didn't have
any slides, and he didn't shake hands or answer questions afterwards. That's
because he was present as a hologram. The speech was recorded in
Gloucestershire, England last year, and was broadcast to the WFES using the
technology of a British company called Musion. Part of the incentive for Charles
to deliver the speech via hologram was to save the 15 tons of CO2 that would
have been expended if he had made the trip in a physical jet. The speech
involved praising the creation of a new carbon neutral city in Abu Dhabi called
Masdar which is currently in development. The city of Masdar will rely entirely
on solar energy, and the first phase of construction is estimated to be
habitable by 2009."

  1. The hologram may be useful to scientist who want to project what they are observing to other scientists at different locations so they can collaborate. It could be used to recreate history for students to experience and learn from. Maybe a 3d projection of Einstein working in a lab, holograms of extinct animals, the universe, and Earth, could help scientists make new discoveries. It may become an artform to create holographic images to display in museums or gallerys. For entertainment it could be used to replace television, called holovision. The possibilities are endless.

  2. Holograms are really the future of communication. You see it in so many sci-fi movies and books as this crazy new technology. I think that web cams and other similar things will eventually become obsolete in favor of hologram technology. I hope to see something crazy come out of hologram technology in my lifetime.

  3. This new technology will literally give you the ability to be in two places at once! I can't believe that we were even close to using holographic messages, let alone already having them. Stories like this always make me feel that the future that is often portrayed in science fiction movies is just around the corner. I suppose this is also a very good step for the environment as well, because as the main post noted, 15 tons of carbon dioxide stayed out of the atmosphere because Prince Charles did not take a trip. Maybe in the future, all kinds of meetings and speeches where face to face interaction is not entirely necessary can be substituted by holographic messages.
