What is Twitter?

This seems to be a popular question lately…. Twitter is a free social network that allows users to keep up to date with each other. Followers or people who are subscribed to a users account are sent updates as they are posted. These updates or messages are known as “tweets.” These tweets are short bursts of less than 140 characters. They may contain any thought emotion or feeling. Twitter is currently one of the top 50 most visited websites. As it has become more popular, Twitter users can access their accounts more conveniently. Updates can be sent through cell phone texts or applications.
There are many celebrities who use Twitter. Ashton Kutcher is one of the most famous users, he was the first to have 1 million followers. Ellen DeGeneres and Brittney Spears place second and third. Twitter was used during the most recent presidential election as a publicity tactic.

  1. Can there ever be too much Communication? If so I believe this is coming sort of close, I could be wrong I have never tried it. I wouldn’t though want to be receiving “tweets” about a favorite celebrity or people whom I don’t care of their every detail. I’m curious as to what the benefits of this are. Maybe business promotion or news updates.

  2. Twitter seems to me like the least effective of the communication technologies since there’s no way to authenticate the source of the information that you receive. Authenticity is a problem on a lot of social networking sites, but twitter just seems worse because of the manner in which it works. I’m not knocking the technology – it can serve a purpose. It’s become trendy and invites abuse because of it.

  3. Twitter is a really cool service. It allows people to keep track of what their friends are doing, whether it be planning a party, sitting around bored looking for something to do, or even finding out something cool. It brings people together and allows them to share their thoughts. Many companies are even starting to use Twitter to share product updates and other important news. While i don't think it will surpass websites like Facebook for communication and networking, Twitter will always be up there.
